Candice Dupree Bio

Candice Joanna Dupree was born on August 16, 1984, and grew up in Tampa, Florida. Her father’s name was Toussaint Dupree and her mother’s name was Patricia Mungenast. Both parents are retired members of the Air Force. The most interesting thing is that Candice is a twin sister. She has two siblings, Crystal Dupree, who is her twin, and Shayna Dupree, her much younger sister. She had and still has a very warm relationship with her mother, who she says is her biggest fan. At the age of 10, she developed an interest in playing basketball and her mother pushed her to continue, so she played in high school.

Candice attended Paul R. Wharton High School where she played basketball and volleyball. Her impressive basketball skills and records led to her being named both Tampa Tribune Player of the Year and Bundesliga Player of the Year in 2002. In the same year, she has also named the second All-State Team and the first All-Suncoast Team. As good as she was at basketball, she was also good at volleyball when she led the school’s volleyball team to a district title.

After high school, Candice Dupree enthusiastically stormed into college when she enrolled at Temple University in Pennsylvania. She graduated in 2006 after four years of doing her best in basketball, winning laurels, titles, awards, and honors with the college’s women’s basketball team – The Owls. Among the personal honors, she has received are the Naismith Award, the John R. Wooden Award, and the WBCA/State Farm Wade Trophy in 2006. Candice also won the MVP of the A-10 Tournament for three consecutive years – 2004, 2005, and 2006.

Is Candice Dupree Gay? Family, Kids, Spouse

Candice Dupree is in a gay relationship with DeWanna Bonner, her former teammate when she played for Phoenix Mercury. They’ve moved things up and they’re a married couple now. The couple got married on November 4, 2016, in a blissful ceremony attended by friends and most of the teammates. The marriage was already blessed with children as the former teammates who became a married couple welcomed their first offspring on July 30, 2017, who turned out to be twin girls, just like Dupree.

WNBA Career

Candice Dupree never thought she would go pro or pursue a basketball career until she was in college. Her heroics in high school were just out of her love for the courts, but when she was in junior college year, she decided that she would pursue a professional career in basketball.

In the 2006 WNBA Draft, she was voted 6th overall by the Chicago Sky, and in her debut year, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2015, and 2017, she was named to the Eastern Conference WNBA All-Star Team. In her starting year, she played Dawn Staley in the WNBA All-Star Game. Dawn Staley was the basketball coach of her college team. She joined Phoenix Mercury in March 2010, where she won the 2014 WNBA Championship under a three-team agreement – she happened to play in the final against her former team Chicago Sky, which she defeated 3-0.

In 2017, in another three-team swap, Candice Dupree moved to the Indiana Fever franchise, where she was named in the 2017 WNBA All-Star Game, which was her sixth nomination. Internationally, Dupree represented the USA at the 2005 World University Games in Izmir, Turkey, where she won a gold medal. She was appointed to the U.S. national team, which played against a WNBA All-Stars team in preparation for the 2010 FIBA (Women’s) World Championship, which was to be held in the Czech Republic. She was also part of the team that made it to the FIBA games. The team, trained by Geno Auriemma, defied the odds (of having too little training time) to beat both then-unbeaten Australia and the host, the Czech Republic, and win the gold medal.
