Michelle Suzanne Dockery was born on 15 December 1981 in the Rush Green area of East London, England. Her parents are Lorraine (née Witton) and Michael Francis Dockery. She grew up with 2 older sisters, Louise and Joanne. She began her secondary education at Chadwell Heath Academy and later moved to Finch Stage School. She then studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where she was awarded the Gold Medal for Drama on graduation in 2004.

Michelle Dockery was trained at the National Youth Theatre where she began her career as a stage actress. She received her first professional acting role in the stage production of His Dark Materials at the Royal National Theatre in 2004. This was followed by many other roles in plays at various theaters, which earned her several awards. The talented actress made her television debut when she played the role of Betty in the BBC mini-series Fingersmith (2005).
