Violet Moon Howey is the daughter of actor Steve Howey and his ex-wife, Sarah Shahi. Violet’s father, Howey, is known for his roles as Van Montgomery on The WB/CW’s Reba and Kevin Ball on Showtime’s Shameless. Her mother Sarah is also an actress, having played Carmen in the 2005 series The L Word, Kate Reid in the USA Network legal drama Fairly Legal (2011-2012), and Sameena Shorey in the CBS crime series Person of Interest. Shashi is currently starring in the Netflix series “Sex/Life”.

Sarah Shahi Birthed Her Daughter, Violet Moon Howey At Home 

Violet was born with her twin brother Knox Blue in March 2015 at her parents’ home in Sherman Oaks, California. The first is two hours older than its twin.

She also has an older brother, William Wolf, who was born in July 2009.

Why Did Sarah Shahi Decide To Have Violet And Her Brother At Home?

At the time of her first child, Sarah had said that the reason she chose home birth was that she believed in her body’s natural ability to give birth. She added that by giving birth at home, she wanted to dispel the belief that women do not know how to give birth and that they always need doctors, epidurals, and Pitocin.

But the only thing that really made her and her ex-husband choose natural childbirth was the vision they had after watching the documentary The Business of Birth.

“You have more control during home birth and with hospital births, there is a system in place and we didn’t like the whole system. [Sarah] did not like the idea of being injected with stuff and having a c-section,”

Howey explained to People magazine in December 2020. The couple delivered their babies with the help of a doula, a midwife, and a licensed obstetrician.

However, Sarah’s former father says home births “are not for everyone”. Violet and Knox’s older brother William Woolf was also born in a home water birth.

It Took A While Before Violet’s Mother Could Understand That She Was Having Twins

Just as Sarah was about to find out she was pregnant for the second time, the actress left New York for Los Angeles to pursue acting. When she landed on the West Coast, she had a hunch, took a pregnancy test, and thought about seeing a doctor.

So Knox and Violet’s mother, Sarah, visited the doctor with her eldest son Wolf and her then-husband Steve to confirm the news of the baby. Shahi told us that as soon as the doctor put the transducer on her stomach, he attacked her with a look of shock on his face.

Like he split his eye contact with me,

the Spin City actress said, describing the moment. Afterward, Shahi’s doctor threw a peace sign at her and her ex, which although the latter understood quickly, took the Sex/Life actress some time to realize.

Steve literally got it and jumped so high. I’ve never seen him jump so high. And then he started hyperventilating in the corner,

said Shahi, while talking about the moment she and her ex-spouse found out they had two children. It was only after her doctor uttered the word twins that Sarah finally understood what was happening.

Violet Moon Howey Had A Cord Wrapped Around Her Neck During Her Birth

Although the birth went quickly, Sarah once discovered that Violet had her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck twice. In a podcast, the mother of three said that she had previously feared that something like this would happen.

I was in the tub, I was in the zone. Violet came out. You know, how it is it. But she was blue and not breathing. She had a cord wrapped around her neck.

Steve added that it was tight around her neck and said that was the moment he felt his life flash before his eyes.

Shortly afterward, the couple’s former midwife, Beth, picked her up and began to tell her: “Come, little girl, come, little girl”. Steve said he didn’t do anything, though, and Violet was still unresponsive, being blue all the time.

Then the doctor who was present at the time, who was seeing Knox, spotted Violet with the midwife and immediately started waving her legs. The Texas-born actor said that after that, he and Sarah’s daughter started to change color and screamed her first scream.

The Meaning Behind Violet’s Name 

Sarah and Steve’s daughter, seven-year-old Violet, have a little story behind her name. Howey said in December 2020 that while it was a little easier to give their twins a name, he and Shah went through several different names before settling on Moon as Violet’s middle name.

Moon is apparently Shahi’s mother’s maiden name. Apparently, it is the English translation of Sarah’s mother’s name.

Originally, Howey and Shahi were going to name the girl Moon, but they decided it was better as a middle name. The name Violet came about mainly because they liked Ruby and Olive.

Violet’s parents love home births, as the City On A Hill actress gave birth to all her children in her own home.
