Coaching Career

Kyle Shanahan got his first chance as a coach after graduating in 2003 when head coach Karl Dorrell hired him as a graduate assistant at the University of California, Los Angles (UCLA). The following year, his NFL career began when Jon Gruden hired him as an assistant coach for offensive quality control at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team enjoyed success during Shanahan’s tenure, but he left the team after two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which ended in 2005.

Shanahan took over as Wide Receiver Coach in 2006, having been appointed by head coach Gary Kubiak, who had served his father Michael as offensive coordinator at the Denver Broncos. He was promoted to the team’s quarterback coach the next season in 2017, and on January 11, 2008, he was named offensive coordinator for the team’s last two seasons, making him the youngest coordinator in the NFL.

In 2010, Kyle Shanahan was hired by his father Michael as Offensive Coordinator at the Washington Redskins. His stay was not so successful, coupled with the fact that he was accused of being an act of nepotism when he joined the Washington Redskins. In 2012, Shanahan was fined $2,500 for insulting the replacement officer and confronting another person after his team lost to the Cincinnati Bangles. He was released along with his father and the rest of the coaching staff on December 30, 2013.

His next assignment was given to him on February 1, 2014, by head coach Mike Pettine at the Cleveland Browns as offensive coordinator. His stay with the team was short-lived, however, as he resigned on January 8, 2015, after disagreeing with the Front Office mandate.

Luck was definitely on Kyle’s side, as he received an offer from the Atlanta Falcons that same year. He had a successful season with the team, and in 2016 he had the highest goalscoring record in the league. He also earned an 11-5 record, a Super Bowl spot against the New England Patriots, and a divisional title, and was named Assistant NFL Coach of the Year for the 2016 season. The coach’s career with the Atlanta Falcons ended when he was criticized for his aggressiveness. His current job is with the San Francisco 49ers, where he will be head coach starting February 6, 2017, with a 6-year permanent contract.
