Regardless of the fact that it was difficult to say exactly when Smokey became interested in American football, it is common knowledge that he was successful in the game at Homestead High School.

While he was in the All-Dade County draft in his high school career, he did not storm into the limelight until he transferred to Mars Hill College in North Carolina. He later moved to Pittsburgh State University, where he became a gorilla enthusiast and the team’s record champion in touchdowns, yards, and receptions.
