Who Is Ivan Strinic?

Ivan Strinic is one of the key players in the Croatian national team and a preferred defender for the Italian club A.C. Milan, which he joined as a freelancer in July 2018 after playing a season for UC Sampdoria.

He was born on 17 July 1987 in the Croatian city of Split, formerly SFR Yugoslavia. Split is the second-largest city in Croatia and the largest city in the Dalmatia region (one of the four historical regions of Croatia).

Strinic’s football career began with Hajduk Split, where he played until 2006. After finishing his studies at the club, he moved to France and played for Le Mans B. He then returned to Croatia. In Croatia, he continued his youth career with NK Hrvatski Dragovoljac. After playing for a number of clubs, he became sure-footed and his talent and skills were so obvious that he was scouted by the two biggest and most popular Croatian football clubs, Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split.

He joined HS for the second time in the summer of 2008 and would play there for the next three years, although he had almost signed a contract with Dinamo Zagreb. During his time at the club, Ivan Strinic played in the position of left-back and proved to be the team’s regular. In the same season, he scored four goals in the league, including one in the eternal derby against Dinamo Zagreb in a 2-1 victory.

The following season was a game for the left-back. He played all his club’s matches in the UEFA Europa League campaign, became the first left-back in the national team, and played in eight of nine Euro 2012 qualifiers. At the beginning of 2011, Strinicic Hajduk left Split; he played 77 matches and scored five goals. After his departure, he signed a contract with Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk on 27 January for a contract fee of 4 million euros.

In his first appearance with the club, he scored an impressive goal in a 2-2 draw with Tavriya Simferopol. He had five more appearances this season, 27 more the following season, and played all three matches of the Croatian Euro 2012 campaign in Poland. In the next season (2012-13) he maintained his starting position both in his club and in the national team with a total of 35 appearances. His contract with Dnipro ended in December 2014, after which he moved to Italy and signed with the Italian club S.S.C. Napoli.

After his career in Naples, he moved to another Italian club, Sampdoria, in the summer of 2017 for a fee of 2 million euros. After playing one season and 17 matches, Ivan Strinic moved to Milan for three years as a freelancer alongside Pepe Reina.

International Career

On the international level, Ivan made his senior national team debut on 19 May 2010 in a friendly match against Austria and has been wearing his national jersey ever since. Since then he has been a regular starter and has played a number of prominent matches. Ivan took part in UEFA 2012 in Poland, where he helped Mario Mandžukic equalize the 1-1 draw against Italy and played all three matches on the group stage.

He was also impressive in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, although he missed the finals in Brazil due to a hamstring injury.
