Israeli-American basketball prodigy Sue Bird is one of the stars making waves at the Women’s National Basketball Association. Sue Bird – Bio
She was born on 16 October 1980 as Suzanne Brigit Bird in Syosset, New York. Sue’s father is an Italian-born Russian Jew, and she has an older sister named Jen. She is of multiracial ethnic origin and has both Israeli and American citizenship. Inspired by her older sister, who is interested in athletics, Sue became interested in sports at a very young age. She started playing basketball at the age of eleven and participated in several competitions, including the Amateur Athletic Union competitions and the St. John’s Basketball game.
She attended Syosset High School, where she continued her basketball career at high school. After completing her beginner and second-grade years, Sue transferred to Christ the King Regional High School in Queens, New York. She ended her high school career by winning the New York State Championship and the National Championship. She was also appointed to the WNBA All-American Team.
During her college career, Sue also played for the Huskies at the University of Connecticut. She led the Huskies to win two national championships and was honored with the Nancy Lieberman Award. She finished her college career with 1,378 points, 585 assists, and 23 steals.
Professional Career and Stats
After graduating from the University of Connecticut, Sue Bird was the first overall choice for the Seattle Storm in the 2002 WNBA draft, finishing her rookie season alongside Lauren Jackson with an average of 14.4 points in 32 games. She was named All-WNBA First Team and also finished second in the Rookie of the Year award.
Sue led the storm along with Betty Lennox and Lauren Jackson and won her first WNBA championship in 2004. In 2010, the Storm also won his second WNBA championship. In the off-season, 2004/05 and 2005/06 Sue played for Dynamo Moscow and helped the team reach the final of the Russian championship. The 2006/07 off-season was unforgettable for Sue as she led the Spartak Moscow region to win the Russian Super League and Euro League championships. She also won three consecutive championships with the UMMC Yekaterinburg of the Russian League.
During the 2012 season, Sue suffered a knee injury that led to surgery, so she was unable to play in the 2013 season. She returned in 2014 and played 33 games; Sue finished the season with an average of 10.6 points per game and was named a WNBA All-Star. During the 2016 season, she renewed her contract with the Storm with a multi-year contract including a free agency. She performed remarkably well during the season, averaging 12.8 points and 5.8 assists per game. She was also named All-WNBA First Team. The next season, she became the player with the most All-Star appearances and the WNBA leader in Assists with a total of 2,600 Assists in her career.
Sue is also a four-time Olympic gold medalist with the United States national team. She has led the team to three gold medals and one bronze medal at the FIBA World Championship.
