Professional Career

Ryan joined the Phillies and played a few seasons in the Minor League before joining the team’s MLB squad. Initially, Ryan was assigned the starting position as a pitcher, but after he had challenges in that position, he was named the team’s replacement pitcher. In the 2011 post-season, Ryan signed an $8.5 million annual contract with the Cincinnati Reds. When he joined the Cincinnati Reds team, Ryan suffered a torn ligament that kept him away for the entire 2012 season. The injury meant that the pitcher also missed the two regular seasons of his professional career.

Eventually, he helped the Royals win the American League Division Series that same year. He then received a three-year offer of $22 million from the Oakland Athletics, which he later signed in December 2015.

Ryan joined the Oakland Athletics and replaced Sean Doolittle, who was absent due to injury. In the 2016 season, he scored 30 saves in 63 games. The following year, he was traded to the Washington Nationals along with Doolittle in exchange for Sheldon Neuse, Jesus Luzardo, and Blake Treinen. The Nationals sent him to the Los Angeles Dodgers in August 2018 in exchange for Andrew Istler.
