The successful American publisher Hugh died on 27 September 2017 at his home in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, California, aged 91. He reportedly died of sepsis caused by an E. coli infection.

His body was buried next to Marilyn Monroe in Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles. In 1992, he had reportedly paid $75,000 to reserve a place next to the deceased Monroe. He told the Los Angeles Times in 2009.
