Speaking to People the 41-year-old said: “My sexuality was never a secret but during ‘American Idol’ I was never allowed to comment on it.” When two months before the show’s finale pictures were released showing Adam kissing another man a wave of hate broke out over the singer. He says that during this time he was very ashamed of who he is. “It was like taking a lot of steps backward in my development and self-love” explains the musician.

But today the “If I Had You” singer is thankful for his experiences on “American Idol.” “They made me stronger and inspired me artistically,” he says. In addition, the entertainer reached a personal milestone after participating in the casting format: he has been a singer in the legendary rock band Queen since 2011.
