Is Yuji Naka Still In Jail? The Sonic Creator In Prison For Insider Trading
Yuji Naka, co-creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, allegedly accepted responsibility for insider trading while working at Square Enix.
On November 17, 2022, the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office arrested Naka and charged him with violating the Financial Instruments and Trade Act of 2006.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office charged him with insider trading involving confidential information, and media sources speculated that his arrest was related to the upcoming smartphone game Dragon Quest Tact.
Naka reportedly bought 10,000 shares of the developer, Aiming, prior to the game’s public release.

In addition, two more former Square Enix employees were imprisoned on accusations of purchasing 162,000 shares for approximately 47.2 million yen between December 2019 and February 2020.
Furthermore, Yuji was detained again on December 7 on suspicion of buying 144.7 million yen in shares of game developer ATeam prior to the release of their title, Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier.
Later, the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office brought an insider dealing indictment against him.
Furthermore, according to NHK, the video programmer has admitted guilt and informed a court that there is “no doubt” that he did what was allegedly done (via VGC).
The outcome of Yuji Naka’s judicial appearance has not yet been made public. Given that insider trading is explicitly banned under Japan’s Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, his alleged admission of guilt will almost certainly result in additional charges. As a result, he could still be imprisoned.
