Ish Smith was born under the full name of Ishmael Larry Smith, son of Gwen and Larry Smith, on July 5, 1988, in California, USA. He is of African-American descent and has American citizenship.

He attended Central Cabarrus High School in Concord, North Carolina, and later went to Wake Forest for his college education, where he played basketball for the entire four school years and graduated with an average of 5.1 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.26 steals in 121 games.

Professional Career in the NBA

Despite his successful college basketball career, Smith was not drafted into the 2010 NBA draft but was signed by the Houston Rockets on August 23, 2010. On February 24 of the following year, he was transferred to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Hasheem Thabeet and DeMarre Carroll. He had a total of 15 performances for the Grizzlies and was dropped from the team on December 14, 2010.

After two days of resignation, the Golden State Warriors picked him up, and on December 28, 2010, he made his debut for the Warriors in their winning game against the New York Knicks, scoring 11 points, 4 assists, and 6 rebounds. The Warriors also relinquished him on January 13, 2012, and he signed with Orlando Magic on February 2 of the same year and later moved to the Milwaukee Bucks.

In August 2012 he was sold to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Caron Butler and remained with them until 2014. With a 106-85 win over the San Antonio Spurs on February 21, 2014, he reached a tremendous career-high of 15 points. Five months later, the Phoenix relinquished him, and on July 19, 2014, he was re-signed by the Houston Rockets.

He appeared in six pre-season games for the Rockets and was recalled in October. In November of the same year, he signed for the Oklahoma City Thunder, whereupon he was sold on February 19, 2015, to the New Orleans Pelicans, who waived his bet the same day.

Two days later he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers and his form improved as his record with them was the best of his career to date. Smith later signed with the Washington Wizards, but the Wizards relinquished his contract on October 24 after he had played in five preliminary-round games. The New Orleans Pelicans acquired him on October 26, 2015, and traded him for the Philadelphia 76ers on December 24, 2015, but in July 2016 the NBA company signed a three-year contract with the Detroit Pistons, where he still plays today.
