Born Edward Regan Murphy in Brooklyn, New York, Eddie lost his father at the age of eight and had to spend a year in a foster home. His father Charles Edward was an amateur comedian and actor at his side but had a full-time job as a police officer.
After the death of his father Eddie and his older brother were raised by their mother and their stepfather Vernon Lynch, who was a foreman at Breyer’s ice cream factory.
Eddie went to school at Roosevelt Junior-Senior High School, where he made a name for himself as an outstanding comic. By the age of fifteen, he had begun appearing on the streets of New York as a stand-up comic. His style was characterized by accurately reproducing the impressions of celebrities and making jokes about the simple things in life.
At the age of 19, Murphy was offered a contract for the “Not-Ready-For-Prime-Time” players of Saturday Night Live. Among other things, he played an adult version of the little rascal Buckwheat, Mr. Robinson, and a grumpy, cynical Gumby. Murphy made his feature film debut in 48 hours. (1982) alongside Nick Nolte.
In 1984, Murphy starred in Beverly Hills Cop, which was his breakthrough, the film turned Murphy into a box office superstar and made him a worldwide celebrity, and he is still one of the biggest domestic blockbusters in film history. It generated gross box office revenues of over $230 million and in August 2012 was number 41 on the list of all-time US box office receipts.
If “Beverly Hills Cop” was the movie that announced Eddie Murphy on the big stage, then “Coming to America” (shot in 1988) put him on a firm footing on the world stage. As Eddie Murphy grew older, he retreated to more family-oriented humor with Doctor Dolittle, Mulan, Bowfinger, and the cartoon Shrek. During the 2000s he starred in other successful productions such as The Haunted Mansion, Shrek 2, Dreamgirls, Norbit, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After.
It is fair to say that Eddie Murphy is a versatile entertainer. He also tried his hand at music and did not do badly. In the 80s he had two hit singles to his credit party All the Time and Put Your Mouth On Me. In the early ’90s, Eddie recorded a whole album. The album was called – Love’s Alright.
He appeared in a music video for the single Whatzupwitu with Michael Jackson, recorded a duet with Shabba Ranks called I Was a King and in 1992 he appeared in Michael Jackson’s Remember the Time alongside Magic Johnson and Iman.
