Christian Benteke is a tall, somewhat lanky professional footballer who has spent a reasonable amount of his career playing top-level football for some of the best teams in the English Premier League (EPL). Benteke also plays for the Belgian national football team as a striker, a position he also holds for his club team.

Benteke began his professional career with Standard Liège, a club in his home country of Belgium. However, he gained greater recognition when he joined Aston Villa, which gave him the opportunity to shine in what is arguably the highest European league. Because of his exceptional contribution, he moved to Liverpool FC in a major financial deal.

Since then, his career has not really reached the heights one would expect from someone of his quality and potential, but he continues to fight to achieve this. He has played in over 30 matches for Belgium and was a member of the UEFA Euro 2016 squad.

Biography of Christian Benteke

Benteke was born on 3 December 1990 in his native Congo. Three years after his birth in 1993 he emigrated with his family to Belgium. Christian developed a love for football after arriving in Belgium and started training to make a career out of it.

His Career at Standard Liège and Genk

His earliest documented encounter with the game was with the youth football team JS Pierreuse. He then moved to Genk, where he stayed from 2007 to 2009. From here he moved to Standard Liège in January 2009 for the rest of the 2008/2009 season. He contributed 3 goals in 12 appearances for the club when they went on to win the Belgian championship. The next season he was sent on loan to KV Kortrijk, where he scored 14 times for the Belgian professional league team. After an overwhelming second rental season, he returned to Genk for the 2011/2012 season. During his career, he scored 19 goals and 9 assists in a total of 37 matches, of which he started in 20.

Crystal Palace

The Belgian international became a Crystal Palace striker on 20th August 2016, with Crystal Palace paying a fee of £27 million for his services. He scored his first goal for the club three weeks later in a 2-1 away win in Middlesbrough. Benteke also scored two draws, the first on his birthday against Southampton and the second against his former team, Liverpool, on 23 April 2017, ending the season with 17 goals from 40 appearances in all competitions. The 2017/2018 season turned out to be yet another disaster for the striker, as he only scored 3 goals in 30 games in the entire season.

Aston Villa

In some games in the 2012/2013 season, Christian was signed by the Premier League club Aston Villa for a fee of probably about 7 million pounds sterling. After scoring goals in his debut match against Swansea City, Benteke continued a rich goalscoring record throughout the season, thrilling clubs such as Norwich, Liverpool and in a 6-1 win over Sunderland. He finished the season with a total of 23 goals in all competitions and earned praise from coaches such as then Tottenham coach Andre Villas-Boas, former England international Michael Owen and his own coach Paul Lambert. Christian finished second after Gareth Bale in the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

The striker carried his rich goalscoring career into the next season, scoring his first four goals in as many games. His thunderous form came to a halt, however, when he suffered a hip flexor injury against Norwich City that left him on the sidelines for at least six weeks. He returned to the game and scored his first goal against Arsenal after a drought of 12 games. Christian Benteke then scored goals against players such as Liverpool, West Brom, and Norwich City before suffering an Achilles tendon rupture during training in April 2014. He was eliminated for a much longer period, which left him out of the season and made him miss the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Christian Benteke had an overwhelming 2014/2015 season as he went through several periods of goal-scoring during the campaign. However, he was able to recover a little and scored 11 goals in 9 appearances after Tim Sherwood took over as coach. He also led his side to the FA Cup final for the first time in 15 years. Unfortunately, they lost the title against Arsenal in a 4-0 routine.

Liverpool

The highly-rated striker was caught and signed by Liverpool on 22 July 2015 for a then-record club fee of £32.5 million. With the exception of a few spectacular goals against players like Chelsea and Leicester City, his only season in Liverpool should, unfortunately, be forgotten. The main reason for this was that he was still suffering from tricky injury problems and also did not fit into the style of play that new coach Jürgen Klopp had hoped for. In 42 appearances he scored only 10 goals, most of them from the bench. At the end of the season, he was transferred to Crystal Palace.

Christian Benteke National Team Career

The striker has represented Belgium since his youth and was active for his country at the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2007, where he scored in three appearances. He scored his first goal for the senior side on 15 August 2012 in a 4-2 win over the Netherlands. Benteke holds the record for the fastest goal in a FIFA World Cup competition, having scored in just 8.1 seconds in the match against Gibraltar in qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He has scored 12 goals in 32 international matches for Belgium.

His Family

The Crystal Palace striker was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the capital Kinshasa. In 1993, Benteke and his parents, Jean-Pierre Benteke (father) and Marie-Clair Benteke (mother) fled the country due to the unspeakable hardship caused by the regime of the then President Mobutu. The family moved to the city of Liège in Belgium.

Benteke has a younger brother, Jonathan, who was born two years after the family came to Belgium. Jonathan is also a footballer who has played as a striker for teams such as Zulte-Waregem and Omonia Nicosia. He joined the Crystal Palace development squad the same season as Christian and was substituted for him in a game against Middlesbrough. On 6 February 2018, Jonathan moved to League One’s Oldham Athletic under a short-term contract that lasted until the end of the season.

Christian Benteke married his girlfriend Fortune Benteke in mid-2017 in an elaborate, closed ceremony.

Christian Benteke Height and Weight

Christian is fit and looks at it, standing at an impressive height of 1.9 m (6 feet 3 inches). He also has a healthy weight of about 83 kg. As an athlete, he always looks fit, although he has had several seizures with injuries, none of which have taken him out of the game permanently. We hope he continues to shine on and off the field.
