The actress was born on September 1, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, as Mary Jean “Lily” Tomlin, the daughter of her parents Lillie Mae (January 14, 1914 – July 12, 2005) and Guy Tomlin (March 3, 1913 – October 24, 1970), who are Southern Baptists. Her mother was a housewife and nurse’s aide, while her father, Guy, was a factory worker.

Tomlin has a younger brother named Richard Tomlin, and her family emigrated from Paducah, Kentucky, to Detriot during the Great Depression.

From Cass Technical High School to Wayne State University, Tomlin originally studied biology but found her true calling in the entertainment industry after auditioning for a play. Tomlin was cast in her first movie in 1974, and her leading role was in The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, which opened on Broadway in 1985. The film won her the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play.
