Tyreek Hill is probably one of the fastest players in National League Football. He made his professional debut in 2016 after being drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs, a selection that was highly controversial due to Hill’s history of domestic violence that led to his arrest in 2014. Tyreek Hill might have turned over a new leaf and done his best to right his wrongs, but the stigma of being a wife-beater would probably continue to plague him as long as he plays professional football. Here’s what we found out about the double Pro Bowl wide receiver.

Tyreek Hill Biography (Age, Education)

Hill was born Tyreek D’Shaun Hill on March 1, 1994, in Lauderhill, Florida, and grew up with his single mother Virginia Hill in Fort Lauderdale. Hill moved to Georgia where he began his high school education at Coffee High School. In high school, Hill’s athletic side was immediately apparent. He was most successful in athletics and set a number of records. Hill’s most successful season in high school took place in his junior year 2012. At the 5A State Meeting in Georgia, Hill won the 100m and 200m races.

His best 100m race was run at 10:19 a.m., the second-fastest by a junior athlete in the 2012 season. 2012 Hill was named “High School Athlete of the Year” by Track and Field News. In the same year, he was named All-American Track and Field Athlete of the Year by USA Today.

After graduating high school, Tyreek Hill moved to Garden City Community College, where he continued to run track and field athletics and also played football. His soccer skills immediately caught the attention of other schools and Hills became involved with Oklahoma State University. Hill did well for the team until he was expelled from the team when he was arrested for domestic violence.

Luckily for Hill, he was considered for a place on the team by the head coach of the University of West Alabama, Brett Gilliland, who naturally turned him down at first after he learned of the details of his domestic violence case. However, he was persuaded otherwise after meeting Hill in person and seeking further background information at his former schools.

With graduation approaching, Hill’s footballing future looked very uncertain. The domestic violence issue meant not many teams would be interested in him, but the Kansas City Chiefs came to his aid and selected him for the fifth round (165th in total) of the 2016 NFL draft. Hill’s selection must have been controversial due to the 2014 domestic violence case. However, the Chiefs’ management cleared the air with an impromptu press conference in which they explained why they had taken a risk on Tyreek Hill. They explained that they had checked his story thoroughly and talked to the prosecutor who was handling the case.

His contract, signed on May 17, 2016, was a four-year contract worth about $2.6 million with a $100,000 guarantee and a $70,000 signing bonus.

Despite the scandal, Tyreek Hill did well to keep his head in his game and deserved a number of awards, including being named a returns specialist in the 2016 Pro Bowl. In 2017, he made it back into the Pro Bowl.

Girlfriend

Tyreek Hill maybe with someone else now, but his most popular girlfriend would remain Crystal Espinal for a long time, the one he physically abused during his time at Oklahoma State when they were together.

As the story goes, Hill and the then 20-year-old and 8-week pregnant Crystal were together in Hill’s apartment when Crystal received a text message that Hill was hitting on some high school girls. When she confronted Hill with the allegations, he threw her phone into the hallway and pushed her out of his room. Scarcely dressed, Crystal entered the house again to put on her clothes and leave, but Hill attacked her aggressively, choked her, and punched her in the stomach. She filed charges and Hill pleaded guilty to all of them.

Hills was behind bars for at least a year and was lucky enough to get off with three years probation. He was also ordered to take anger management classes, a domestic violence assessment, and a racket program. Tyreek did well not to follow any of those orders. Crystal was later to give birth to a baby boy. There doesn’t seem to be any bad blood between Hill and his ex-girlfriend, who in 2015 wrote in a Twitter reply to an Oklahoma State fan: “I am the person he attacked. If I can let go, so can you.”
