Sydel Curry is the sister of NBA superstars Steph Curry and Seth Curry. Like other members of the Curry clan, Sydel is an athlete. She had aspired to a professional career with her volleyball career, but her dreams were shattered in college when an injury forced her to announce the early end of her career.
In February 2017, she went to her Facebook page to break the sad news to her fans. The post read;
“I never thought that my first adult decision about my future would be something so difficult. I have dedicated so much of my life, my identity, to my sport. As an athlete and competitor, I will always want to put my sport before many other things. As much as I would like nothing more than to have played when I was 5 years old, I know that some things, like injuries, are beyond my control, and I place all of this in God’s hands. This is the unexpected end of an amazing chapter for which I thank God every day”.
Curry is something of a celebrity on social media with over 500k followers on Instagram, where she is very active.
Sydel Curry Bio/Volleyball
Sydel was born on October 20, 1994, in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, as the son of retired NBA player Dell Curry, who became known primarily through his time with the Charlotte Hornets, and Sonya Curry, a school administrator at the Christian Montessori School of Lake Norman, who played volleyball at Radford High School and also in college at Virginia Tech. While the boys followed in their father’s footsteps, Sydel decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps.
Sydel attended an elementary school that her mother helped to build. However, between 2001 and 2002, when her father played for the Toronto Raptors, Sydel lived with her father in Toronto and attended Queensway Christian College in Etobicoke, Ontario.
Like her two older brothers, Sydel attended Charlotte Christian School in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she played volleyball. She was a starter for four years and captain of her team for three years. Under her leadership, the team reached the state quarter-finals for three seasons. In the 2012 season, Sydel was instrumental in helping her team set a new school record for the most wins in a season.
Sydel was selected four times for the CISAA All-Conference (2009-12) and three times for the NCISAA All-State (2011-12). Sydel played not only for her school team but also for Carolina Union, with whom she will be visiting the national team in 2012.
When it came time for college, Sydel had two choices: Elon University or UNC Greensboro, she chose the former. However, her first year of study did not start as smoothly as she might have wished, as she was redheaded due to a knee injury. In her four years with Lady Phoenix, Curry has played 81 games and made 2,381 career appearances, putting her in eighth place in the team’s all-time rankings. In the 2015 season, she had 851 helpers, which put her in 11th place in the most helpers in a single season. Her number of 1,170 assists in the 2016 season is the fifth-highest in a single season.
Curry rested her arms and decided to retire due to a dislocated knee, not in her 5th season. In May 2017 she finished her studies of psychology with a diploma.
