Nev Schulman’s big breakthrough came in 2010 with the documentary Catfish. Filmed by his brother Ariel and a colleague Henry Joost, it tells the story of how Schulman met and loved a girl he met online. The documentary Catfish was the filming of Schulman’s friendship on Facebook with the little girl Abby, who caught his attention with her first message to him, which he answered, and who eventually ended up as a friend of her mother Angela Wesselman and her sister Megan, with whom Schulman began a romantic relationship.

The relationship lasted more than six months, during which the two lovebirds shared details about themselves that caught the attention of Schulman’s older brother Ariel Schulman and her boyfriend Henry Joost, and they began to record the story. However, Shulman felt that Megan was hiding things from him, and this led him, his brother, and Henry Megan’s family to make a surprise visit to their hometown in Michigan to find out the truth.

Everything changed during this visit when the lies and deception of the relationship were exposed from Megan’s side. Although it was a bitter experience for the young Schulman, the whole film told the truth behind most of the social media alliances Catfish was about. The success of the documentary was amazing and Schulman’s fans grew in number as most young people could identify with his experiences with social media dating.

The Catfish documentary led to the series Catfish: The TV Show in which Schulman and his colleague Max Joseph introduce couples who have dated online but have not yet met face to face to meet for the first time in real life and learn the truth about their previous relationship.

In addition to his work as a dancer, photographer, and television presenter, Schulman has also written a book entitled In Real Life: Love, Lies & Identity in the Digital Age”, in which he reports in detail on his personal experiences with online romance and recounts observations he has made about Catfish.
