Matt Nagy is the current head coach of the Chicago Bears. Prior to joining the Bears in January 2018, Nagy served as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Eagles and as offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Nagy was a former player. Before embarking on a coaching career, he played American football in high school, college and as a professional for the Columbus Destroyers, Georgia Force, Carolina Cobras, and the New York Dragons, all in the Arena Football League (AFL).

Matt was born on April 24, 1978, in Dunellen, NJ. He attended Manheim Central High School in Pennsylvania, where he played high school football and was the team’s star quarterback. During his high school career, the Barons finished 26-2.

After high school, he played college football in Delaware, where he earned 8,214 career pass yards. Brett Veach, general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs, was his teammate in Delaware.

At the end of his college career, Matt was signed by the New York Dragons of the Arena Football League, AFL, as a Street Free Agent. He played with the team, and when he wasn’t on the active roster, he served as the team’s color commentator for radio shows.

After spending two seasons with the Dragons (2002, 2003), he switched to the Carolina Cobras. In early 2005, he returned to Georgia Force to replace injured quarterback Jim Kubiak. Later he was to lead the team to the ArenaBowl XIX. During the 2006 off-season, he was transferred to the Columbus Destroyers. The next season he led the team to ArenaBowl XXI, but unfortunately, they lost in the championship match against the San Jose SaberCats.

Matt Nagy was on the team for two seasons before the AFL collapsed in 2009.

High School and NFL Coaching Career

Nagy began his coaching career with his high school team as an assistant coach. He then served as a quarterback coach at Cedar Crest in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. During his time at CCHS, he introduced several playing tactics from his college days in Delaware.

He also served as the offensive head coach of Junior Varsity. Between 2008 and 2009, Matt served as an offensive coordinator for the Palmyra Area High School football team – the Palmyra Cougars.

Matt Nagy began his NFL coaching career in 2009 as an internship coach with the Philadelphia Eagles under coach Andy Reid. In August of the same year, the franchise hired him to replace the injured Kevin Kolb, who was playing as the team’s replacement quarterback.

The NFL terminated his contract the next day after it became known that his contract with the AFL was still valid (even though the league had already dropped out at that time). The Eagles did not re-contract Nagy but allowed him to continue working as a coach trainee. In 2010 he was promoted to assistant coach and in 2011 he was appointed as the team’s offensive quality control coach.

In 2013, Matt Nagy became quarterback coach of the Kansas City Chiefs under coach Andy Reid, who signed a new contract with the Chiefs. After three seasons he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2016. In December 2017, coach Reid relinquished the task of appointing Matt, and under him, the team finished the regular season 4-1 with an average of 28.6 points.

In January 2018 the Chicago Bears hired Nagy as head coach of the team, making him the 16th coach in the team’s history. Inputting together his team of coaches, Matt Nagy hired Brad Childress as his senior offensive advisor, Brock Olivo as the assistant to the Special Teams Coordinator, Brian Ginn (his teammate from Delaware), and Bill Shuey (his colleague at the Eagles) as quality control coaches, and finally his former Dragon team-mate, Mike Furrey, as the team’s Wide Receivers coach.

Matt is happily married to his high school sweetheart Stacey, with whom he has four children – all boys. Nagy told the Chiefs’ website that they tried to get a girl but had twin boys instead. Their sons are Brayden, Tate, Jaxon, and Jett.

Other Facts

1. Nagy is an only child and his parents separated when he was very young, but he says he has a very close relationship with both his parents.

2. Soccer is life for him, he cannot imagine a life without the soccer game.

3. Matt is not considered an outdoor person but says he would like to learn fishing and hunting.

4. His favorite vacation spot is the Caribbean, where he could see the water and stick his feet in the sand.

5. Matt’s favorite food is chicken quesadilla from The Cat’s Meow – a typical theme restaurant in Manheim.
