Deryck Whibley founded Sum 41 alongside bassist Grant McVittie and vocalist Jon Marshall. Originally known as Kaspir they started as a cover band of NOFX. By 1999 they signed with Island Records internationally.

Deryck Whibley was born in Scarborough a suburb of Toronto and grew up in Ajax Ontario. Raised by a single parent he attended Southwood Park Public School and later Exeter High School where he and his bandmates were discovered at a War of the Bands event during his teenage years. Whibley developed an interest in architecture and once expressed a desire to design houses if he weren’t a musician.

In 2006, Deryck Whibley married fellow singer Avril Lavigne whom he had known since she was 17. They occasionally performed together and publicly discussed their relationship. Their wedding took place on July 15, 2006, at a private estate in Montecito California with around 110 guests in attendance.

However, after just over three years of marriage, Lavigne filed for divorce in October 2009 which was finalized in November 2010.
