Any successful entrepreneur will tell you that the key to building a viable business is to find a need in society and then start a process to satisfy that need. But the interesting thing about modern society is that the needs that need to be satisfied have become very diverse. They go beyond food, shelter, cars, and some other obvious needs. In some cases, it is about the need to engage in violent and intense physical exercise. Dana White has built a multi-billion dollar empire to meet this need.

As fate would have it, at a friend’s wedding he met an old school friend, Lorenzo Fertitta, who quickly made a name for himself and ran the Vegas casinos he owned with his brother Frank. White and the Fertittas quickly found each other and remembered their love of boxing.

The perfect opportunity presented itself when White learned that Semaphore Entertainment Group, the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), was looking for a buyer for the UFC. Lorenzo Fertitta and his brother Frank were convinced by Dana White to buy the struggling company for $2 million. They let White act as president of the newly-formed parent company of the UFC, Zuffa, LLC. He owned a 9% stake in the holding company Zuffa, LLC.

The new company was not a walk in the park at first, as UFC struggled to be profitable. As reported in 2004, UFC has incurred losses of nearly $35 million since its acquisition by Ferttitas. Lorenzo, Frank, and White launched a campaign and lobbied various sports jurisdictions to legalize the sport.

While they were still struggling with the problem, they decided that an increased television presence would help the company turn the tide. It turned out to be a masterstroke. The Ultimate Fighter was born, and Zuffa paid Spike TV $10 million for airtime. The show was produced between September and October 2004 and aired in 2005.

It became a rating success for Spike TV. The TV show helped the UFC gain a whole new level of popularity with the largely male-dominated audience of Spike TV. The new television audience was the ultimate opportunity for Dana White to express the sassy and often arrogant personality that UFC fans associate with him.

In July 2016 it was announced that the UFC was sold to a group of investors led by WME-IMG. White added, however, that he would continue in his role as president. He ventured into boxing by promoting the mega-fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. against Conor McGregor, partly because McGregor was a former fighter for the UFC.
