What Happened to his Hand (Finger)?

Gerald had an accident when he was in the sixth grade of high school. Wearing his mother’s class ring on his right ring finger, he tried to get stuck on a makeshift tire attached to a doorway, and the ring got caught on a nail that automatically tore his finger to the bone. The finger was finally amputated on the doctor’s recommendation. When he talked about the incident and its impact on his personality, Green said that he would have to deal with issues of insecurity afterward, as his colleagues made jokes about it both in high school and during his career. He also revealed that he never wanted people to know about it because it made him feel like an outsider. However, the accident did not cause him to give up his basketball career. After enduring the pain and shame, Green returned to the court with a bandaged hand and, although the amputated finger made it impossible for him to hold a ball in his hand, he still tries to make his shots, as he does to this day.
