Khandi Alexander, who appeared as medical examiner Dr. Alexx Woods, first appeared in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, before becoming a regular on CSI: Miami, the first offshoot of the series. Alexander is an American dancer, choreographer, and actor who has played major roles in television series on NBC, CBS, and HBO. Khandi Alexander began her career as an actress in the 1980s when she made her television debut on FTV, a sketch comedy show, in 1985. Thanks to the format of the show, Alexander was able to play various roles. While her acting career slowly gained momentum, she began to focus on choreography and dance. In 1988 she appeared as a dancer in the music video Pink Cadillac by the late singer and songwriter Natalie Cole. One of her most important moments was touring with the late Whitney Houston as part of the singer’s choreography team during her 1988-1992 world tour, playing minor roles in the shows Rags to Riches, Duet, and A Different World. She also focused on acting in films, appearing in the movies Streetwalkin’ and A Chorus Line in 1985 and Maid to Order in 1987.

When the 1990s arrived, Khandi Alexander’s acting career began to take off. In 1993 she starred in the films CB4, Joshua Tree, Menace II Society, What’s Love Got to Do with It, Poetic Justice, and Shameful Secrets. The following year she appeared in House Party 3, Sugar Hill, To My Daughter with Love and Greedy. She received her first major role in a television series in 1995, when she was regularly cast in the role of Catherine Duke for NBC radio NewsRadio. The series was broadcast for five seasons. Of the 97 episodes of the series, Khandi appeared in 58 of them. She left the series in the seventh episode of season four, before returning for the last time in the first episode of season five.

Khandi Alexander had a recurring role in the NBC medical drama ER as Jackie Robbins, the sister of the character of Dr. Peter Benton, played by Eriq La Salle. Alexander’s appearances in the series were from 1995 to 2001, and she appeared in a total of 29 episodes. She has had several other minor roles on other television shows, including La Femme Nikita, Better off Ted, NYPD Blue, Third Watch, and Body of Proof.

In 2000, Khandi Alexander received high praise for her acting performance as a drug addict and mother Francine Boyd in the Emmy Award-winning HBO mini-series The Corner.
