A hip-hop act that neither smokes nor brags about smoking a round of weed, because he really doesn’t… That sounds almost impossible at a time when bragging about flashy things has become the norm for rap stars. Well, Vince Staples is here to bring a revolution, although he doesn’t like to think of himself as a revolutionary. As a former member of the infamous Crip Gang, he only competes against a lifestyle he believes deserves to be kicked.
Some sources have gone so far as to describe him as the anti-rapper of our time, but make no mistake, Staples’ lines are just as good as those of those on the other side and even better than some. His penitent lifestyle is due to the fact that he is a follower of the straight-edge culture. Vincent Jamal Staples was born on July 2, 1993, in Compton, California, the last child of a family of six. He has two brothers and three sisters, one of whom died in 2014. Raised in a crime-ridden environment, Vince Staples and his family, all of whom were involved in gangsterism in one way or another, lived in abject poverty.

His parents soon divorced, and his father was arrested later on Christmas Day and then sent to prison. This is a subject Staples prefers to keep silent about, although he does reveal some details in the lyrics of his song “Nate”.
In an effort to raise her children away from violence, Vince’s mother Eloise Staples, whom her son calls a wild child, moved the entire family to the Ramona Park neighborhood of North Long Beach, California. Vince was in first grade at the time. However, the family’s move could not prevent Vince from becoming involved in the gang’s violence. As he confessed several times, everyone in his family was part of it.
Vince attended many high schools because he was kicked out for one or the other trouble, or like the case at the white-dominated Mayfair High in Lakewood, where he was framed for stealing a phone.
Although he led a hard life, Staples was one of the smartest kids in his class. His interests ranged from politics to current affairs to writing.
Before he was kicked out of Mayfair High School, Vince had aspired to go to college, graduate from high school, and even play basketball. But since he had to change schools all the time, his dreams went down the drain.
His mother had to send him to one of her sisters in Atlanta for 8 months, where he lived for 8 months before the gang violence. When he came back, he picked up where he left off.
Although Vince never considered music a career path, it somehow became his saving grace. His musical journey began in 2010 when he met and became friends with Dijon Samo, who later brought him to Los Angeles where he met with members of Odd Future, including Syd the Kid, Earl Sweatshirt, and Mike G.
Vince appeared on some of their titles just for fun. When the group broke up, Vince became close friends with Earl and both fled to Samoa where they recorded the controversial song epaR, which brought them certain popularity.
Later, Vince decided to take the music seriously at the suggestion of veteran manager Corey Smyth, who had already managed De La Soul and Dave Chappelle. Eventually, Smyth Staples was able to broker a record deal with Def Jam after being impressed by his second mixtape Winter In Prague, produced by Michael Uzowuru.
He contacted Earl again, who introduced him to Mac Miller, whose works he would use for his mixtape Stolen Youth (2013), which became his breakout.
In the fall of 2014, Staples released his first EP with Def Jam entitled Hell Can Wait, which has since been on the rise with A$AP Rocky. His track BagBak from his 7-track EP Prima Donna was used for the trailer of the Marvel Studios movie Black Panther.
His second album Big Fish Theory was released in July 2017 to great critical acclaim.

“I guess I have more money, which means nothing to me,” he told Vogue magazine. In addition to music sales and tour income, Staples has also benefited from contracts with Sprite Levi’s and Alexander Wang.

He told Fader that he dated a certain woman from her high school days in middle school from time to time and that they even lived together in his house in Orange County. However, after he returned from a tour in September 2015, he found that her things were gone and she left him a farewell letter.
