Todd White has lived the dream of every young Canadian sports enthusiast. He fulfilled this dream by playing professional-level ice hockey for 14 seasons, playing a total of 654 games for 6 NHL teams, and one field hockey Allsvenskan team before retiring in 2011. During his playing time, he was a center, rocking the jersey of the number 12 team he played for.

Todd White Biography

Todd White was born on May 21, 1975, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, as the son of Carol and Doug White. He grew up with a love for field hockey, as it is one of the most played sports in his country, Canada. When he was much younger, he played field hockey in the Central Canadian Hockey League for Kanata Valley Lasers. He played for Kanata Valley Lasers for two seasons, between 1991 and 1993, and in a single season, he set a record for the highest score of Kanata Valley Lasers.

While still in high school and playing for Kanata Valley Lasers, he also taught a hockey class. During one of his classes, the then assistant coach of the Clarkson University hockey team invited him to watch his team play. Shortly after his visit, White was recruited by the Clarkson Golden Knights, where he spent his next four years playing field hockey. During his time at Clarkson University, he received a scholarship to play field hockey and spent his four years at the university majoring in accounting and finance.

As a recent Todd White played 33 games and scored 22 points, assisted 12 times, and scored 10 goals. He was named one of the top newcomers to ECAC. In his sophomore year, he scored 30 points, scored 13 goals, and assisted 17 times in 35 games. He became the second top scorer of the Clarkson Golden Knights.

In his junior year, White played 38 games – the highest number of games he played in a season with the Clarkson Golden Knights. He assisted 43 times – his record number of assists for the Knights in a single season – and scored 29 goals, for a total of 72 points. He was honored by the ECAC All-Star as the Knights’ top scorer and was also named ECAC Player of the Week three times and the team’s most improved player.

In his senior year, Todd was named co-captain of the Knights. He played 37 times, scored 38 goals, and grabbed 36 assists, earning 74 points, which is an average of 2 points per game. He finished the campaign as the nation’s top scorer, won the Knights’ MVP award, and was named ECAC Player of the Week three times. He was also inducted into the ECAC Championship All-Tournament Team.

Between 1993 and 1997, when he played for the Golden Knights, he played a total of 143 games and scored 198 points.

After graduating from Clarkson University, he wanted to go pro. Things went badly for him at first when he was not included in the national draft in 1997. In the summer of 1997, however, his career took a good turn when he was signed on as a freelancer by the Chicago Blackhawks. In his last season with the Chicago Blackhawks, he played only one game before he was transferred to the Philadelphia Fliers on January 26, 2000. During his time with the Fliers, he spent most of his time playing for the Fliers’ daughter team at the IHL, Philadelphia Phantoms.

He was soon dismissed from the Fliers and on July 12, 2000, he was signed on as a freelancer for his hometown team, the Senators of Ottawa. He spent the next four seasons with the Senators before playing for Södertälje SK in Sweden. He played only one game in Sweden and eventually returned to the NHL to join Minnesota Wild. White spent two seasons with the Wilds and then signed with the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2007-2008 season. His second season with the Thrashers was without a doubt the best season of his career. He was one of the trios that dominated the NHL that season, the attacking trio was called the Little White Russian line. The other couple of the trio were Bryan Little and Ilya Kovalchuk.

In 2010, Todd was then transferred to the New York Rangers. A year later he ended his career as a professional ice hockey player.
