The actress was born on June 22, 1949, in Summit, New Jersey, as the daughter of commercial artist Mary Louise Streep and pharmaceutical manager Harry. She received her stage name Meryl Streep from her mother, who lovingly called her that. The actress was nominated for 20 Academy Awards and has won three times. She has also been nominated for the Golden Globe 31 times and won eight times.

Meryl Streep acting career began during her college years at Vassar College in New York, where she appeared in numerous stage plays with great attention to detail. She began performing professionally on stage in 1975 and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University’s School of Acting the same year. She then turned to television plays and films, for which she received an Emmy in 1978 for her participation in the Holocaust miniseries.
