Mel Gibson was born on 3 January 1965 as Colmcille Gerard Gibson in Peekskill, New York. At the age of 12, he moved with his parents to Sydney, Australia, and began his acting career at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), where he studied acting. His first stage appearance was in the NIDA production of Romeo and Juliet, and his first screen appearance was in the 1977 film Summer City. Immediately after graduating from NIDA, Gibson enrolled with the Southern Australian Theater Company and performed in classic productions such as Oedipus and Henry IV.
In the 1980s he soon founded a production company called Icon Entertainment. In 1984 Gibson entered the American film industry with the film The River, which was a success and received four Oscar nominations. In 1985 he returned to Australia to complete the Mad Max series Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, which featured singer Tina Turner. The actor also won People’s Magazine’s first “Sexiest Man Alive” that year. As a result, the popularity of the actor increased by leaps and bounds.
Gibson was on the big screen in 1987 with the blockbuster movie Lethal Weapon, in which he was cast as Martin Riggs, a policeman, alongside Danny Glover, who played Roger Murtaugh. Controversies
The actor, director, and producer were also confronted with his share of public criticism and personal struggles due to allegations that he was a racist and alcoholic, for which he was on probation for three years and attended meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous. Gibson came back into the limelight in 2010 with the thriller Edge of Darkness, in which he played a policeman investigating the tragic death of his daughter. He then starred in the following action films: Get the Gringo (2012), Machete Kills (2013), and The Expendables 3 (2014).
In 2016, after ten years of being rusty and not directing, Gibson directed Hacksaw Ridge. The film was not his best, but modest enough to earn him a Gloden Globe and Oscar nomination for good direction. The actor also had a comeback appearance at the Academy Awards ceremony in February 2017.
