He grew up in Memphis, where he attended Germantown High School in Germantown, Tennessee. While there, Clark was taught basketball for four years. He was both an above-average player and a multidimensional guard for the Red Devils team.

During the 2013 NBA Draft, Ian Clark was not called up because he failed to reach the height standard for NBA Shooting Guard players. After the draft, he joined the Miami Heat for the NBA Summer League and later led the Golden State Warriors to victory in the Las Vegas Summer League. He scored a total of 33 points and was named MVP of the league. Clark subsequently signed a two-year contract with Utah Jazz.
In the 2013/14 season, Ian Clark shared his time between Jazz and its G-League subsidiary Bakersfield Jam. In 2015 he was assigned to the Idaho Stampede and recalled in March. At the end of March 2015, Jazz decided not to participate in the Idaho Stampede. He was then recruited by the Denver Nuggets, and in September 2015 he signed with the Golden State Warriors.
