Rotten Tomatoes gives the series an 80% rating, with an average score of 6.45/10. People had mixed feelings about it; many disliked the series concept, while half admired the work.

The idea to create a series about a high-profile crime came to Trey Borzillieri; He became intrigued by the murder of Brian Wells.

Borzillieri began interviewing people in Erie, Pennsylvania, the location of the incident, and began corresponding with Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong in 2005, believing she might have information about the case.

He spent years investigating the case and met with Diehl-Armstrong while she was incarcerated.

The series is titled Evil Genius, a reference to Diehl-intelligence Armstrong’s prior to her mental illness.
