Although he currently plays as a quarterback for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL), the name Jake Rudock is not new in the world of American football, but has become a household name not only to the fans of the Detriot Lions but also to lovers of American football in general, especially those who follow the game from grassroots to professional level.

Rudock began playing American football from his high school days at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. After high school, he started playing for the University of Iowa, and he is known to be the starting quarterback for the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2013 and 2014. He also played for the University of Michigan and was one of the 2015 Michigan Wolverines.

Jake Rudock Bio

Jake was born in Miami, January 21, 1993, as Jacob Michael Rudock. However, he grew up in Weston and attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, all in the state of Florida. He played soccer with the school team, and thanks to his contributions, St. Thomas Aquinas made it to the state semi-finals in 2009 after playing 128 of 197 passes over 1,945 yards.

During his senior years, he led the team to both districts, regional, state, and national competitions, setting outstanding records: as starting quarterback, then for the total number of yards, the percentage of passes, degrees, and attempts, and more. He won the Broward County Player of the Year award.

Before graduating high school in 2011, Jake Rudock received college offers from the universities of Colorado, Iowa, Memphis, and Illinois, but chose the University of Iowa. He took a new job in his first year of college and did not play again the following year. In his junior year, he played 13 games and started all of them. His first start, however, was in the game against Northern Illinois. He played every offense for the Hawkeyes, but unfortunately, he lost 30-27 to Northern Illinois University.

The most outstanding game in his junior year was against LSU in the Outback Bowl. Although the game ended in a 21-14 defeat, Rudock recorded nine of twenty-two passes over 102 yards with only one interception. The following season he played all thirteen games and set a record with 204-346 passes, 13 interceptions, 18 touchdowns, and a total of 2,383 yards.

The 2014 season was not one of his best years. This year he recorded the TaxSlayer Bowl defeat to Tennessee, but he still finished the season with 213 of 345 attempts over 2,436 yards, including five interceptions and sixteen touchdowns. He transferred to the University of Michigan in 2015 after the Big Ten Conference approved his transfer and was immediately certified to play that year. In a November game against Indiana, he set a record of six touchdown passes for a single game and won the Co-Big-Ten Player of the Week alongside his receiver Jehu Chesson. The following week, he also set a record when he became the first quarterback in the history of college football to pass 250 yards in three consecutive games.

In 2016, Jake Rudock was named MVP of the Citrus Bowl. He was the first QB in Michigan history to score 250 yards in five consecutive games, and the second QB from Michigan to John Navarre, who threw 3,000 yards in a single season. He finished the season with a percentage of 64 yards in a single season and 3,017 yards in a single season.

Professional Career

In 2016 Rudock was selected by the Detroit Lions in the 6th round (191st round in total) of the NFL Draft. In September he was transferred to the training squad where he stayed until November. During his rookie season, he did not appear again, as he was the third QB player behind Dan Orlovsky and Matthew Stafford. After the 2016 season, Rudock started as Stafford’s replacement, as Orlovsky was not re-contracted.

The team officials used Brad Kaaya from the University of Miami during the 2017 NFL draft to fill Rudock’s position in the preseason. As expected, Jake won the replacement job and attempted his first NFL pass in the game against the Baltimore Ravens.

His Family

Rudock is the son of Kathy and Rob Rudock. His father is a lawyer and his mother a teacher and has a master’s degree. He has two siblings – an older brother who holds a degree in medicine from the University of Miami and a sister who holds a master’s degree from Florida State University.
