Diego Reyes Biography (Age)

Diego Reyes was born on September 19, 1992, in Mexico City, Mexico, as Diego Antonio Reyes Rosales, son of Eva and Rafael Reyes. As a student, he joined the youth academy of Club America, a professional football club in his native Mexico City, where he was highly regarded as a student.

In April 2010, Reyes made his debut for the club replacing Angel Reyna in a league match against Santos Laguna. He was just 17 years old at the time. This season, Reyes received most of his playing time at the 2011 Clausura tournament, where he scored his first and second goals for the club.

That same year, Reyes was part of the Mexican U-20 team that finished third at the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2011. Prior to that, he had also worked for the U-17 national team at the 2009 CONCACAF Championship.

From 2010 onwards, Reyes’s career rose from one highlight to the next, becoming a pillar of Club America’s first-team line-up and attracting the attention of South American and European clubs. He certainly did not damage his reputation, as he once again represented his country and played in every game at the 2012 Summer Olympics where they won gold. Reyes was also the youngest member of the Olympic squad at 19.

In December 2012, Diego Reyes announced that he would join the Portuguese club, FC Porto, at the end of the 2012-13 season for a fee of €7 million. But before he crossed the Atlantic Ocean, he made sure to win the first league title of his career.

Reyes’s first season with Porto did not go as planned. He was relegated to the club’s reserve team, although he made a handful of appearances for the main team this year. The following year was even worse, as he made fewer appearances than last year, prompting Porto to send him on loan.

He played for Real Sociedad in Spain in the 2015-16 season, where he made 28 appearances in total, more than in his first two seasons in Europe combined. For the 2016-17 season, Reyes was again on loan. He joined the Spanish team Espanyol, which had the opportunity to extend the contract permanently. With 35 appearances and one goal for the club, he once again surpassed his record from the previous season.

At the end of the season, Espanyol failed to make the contract permanent, so Reyes had to return to his mother club Porto for the 2017-18 season. This time his face changed as he battled for the season with the club’s first team.

National Career

After constantly representing his country at various junior levels, Diego Reyes’ move to the senior national team seemed inevitable. On 25 March 2013, he made his debut for El Tricolor in a qualifier for the 2014 FIFA World Cup against the United States.

Since then he has represented his country at major tournaments such as the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2014 FIFA World Cup. However, Reyes also had the privilege of captaining Mexico in a friendly match against South Korea on 29 January 2014.
