His childhood was a difficult time as it was planned during the Croatian War of Independence, which became very intense in 1991. Instead of being a child whose chances of collapsing were slim, he found an outlet to make up for his losses, and football became a way of escaping the ugly reality he faced. He played wherever he could find a room, outside her room, in the parking lot, just about anywhere.

In 1992 he enrolled in a primary school and a sports academy, strongly supported by his family. He showed great potential as a youth player, although in the first years of his career he met with rejection because of his small size. Luka was finally signed by Dinamo Zagreb in 2001. There he showed great potential and quality, despite the earlier judgment that was made about him – his size and weak prospects.
