Derek started his acting career when he got several smaller roles on TV shows in 2009. These shows include The Middle, Cougar Town, and The Hills. Derek Theler auditioned for Captain America but was unable to land the role.

Theler also played the role of Jordan in the Christmas movie entitled How Sarah Got Her Wings. The film was released on November 1, 2015, on video-on-demand and in digital HD quality. The premiere of How Sarah Got Her Wings took place on December 6, 2015, on Ion Television.
