Marbury was born into a large family of seven children, he was the sixth child. The Coney Island-born NBA star attended Abraham Lincoln High School. Born in the 1970s, more precisely on February 20, 1977, Stephon was considered the next big star outside of New York during his formative years. Under the watchful eyes of many colleges that sought his talents, Stephon Marbury was one of the most exciting talents in the country. Of the many schools that were interested in the Brooklyn-born point guard, he chose Georgia Tech because the school’s coach was so determined to follow him.
His college career got off to a brilliant start and led the team to the semi-finals of an NCAA tournament in their first season with the Yellow Jackets. However, after playing a season with the Yellow Jackets, Stephon decided to declare for the NBA Draft.
As a well-seeded talent who had just finished another fantastic season, Stephon was undoubtedly a first-round draft candidate, and it was rightly confirmed when he was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks as a fourth overall candidate in the first round. He never played for the Bucks, however, as he was immediately switched to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In his rookie season in the NBA, he was appointed to the all-rookie team after a season in which he scored 15.8 points and 7.8 assists. In his first two seasons with the Timberwolves, he was a prominent leader of the team, leading it to two playoffs in 1997 and 1998.
He didn’t last long in the Timberwolves and was eventually transferred to the New Jersey Nets. He spent two seasons with the Nets, and while he continued to demonstrate his own individual brilliance, he had limited quality talent around him, and the Nets never made the playoffs during his time on the team. After a brief stint with the Nets, he switched to the Phoenix Suns, and with a much better line-up of players, he led the team into the playoffs and ended the season with his second All-Star Team Award.
Stephon earned his reputation as a bad boy after a public feud with the head coach of the New York Knicks in the 2005/2006 season, and after moving to the New York Knicks in 2004, he fell out with head coach Larry Brown. It was the first in a series of feuds and public disputes before he was banned from the team.
Before moving to China for the rest of his career, he played for the Boston Celtics for a year before he went to China to play for the Chinese Basketball Federation. His Chinese romance lasted 8 years and he played for 4 teams during his time in China.
His CBA career began with the Shanxi Zhongyu Brave Dragons. In his first season in CBA, he played in the All-Star Game and won the MVP award, but after a year with Shanxi, he switched to the Foshan Dralions. Due to Foshan’s inability to make the playoffs, Stephon later moved to Beijing Ducks, where he played from 2011 to 2017. During his time with the club, he won three Chinese championships. His last club in the Chinese league was Beijing Fly Dragons. He played from 2017 to 2018, after which he announced his retirement from basketball.
