She was born Ivana Zelnícková on February 20, 1949, in Zlin (formerly known as Gottwaldov) Czech Republic (former Czechoslovakia) Her father, Miloš Zelnícek, was Czech by birth, and her mother Marie Francová came from Austria. She became involved in athletics at a very tender age and received all the support she needed from her father.
Ivana started skiing at this early age, and before she was 6 years old, she was already good at the game. At the age of 12, Ivana was enrolled in a training camp for children’s skiers, where she continued to hone her skills. She completed her higher education at Charles University in Prague, during which she claimed to have been selected as a reserve in the Czechoslovakian ski team for the 1972 Winter Olympics.
