Vasyl Lomachenko is considered the best pound-for-pound active boxer from 2018, after being able to win titles in three weight categories in a record twelve fights. He achieved this after conquering amateur boxing with successive gold medals at Olympic Games and World Championships and setting a record of 396 wins and one defeat, making him the most successful amateur boxer of all time.

Age, Early Life, and Rise to Fame

Lomachenko was born on February 17, 1988, in Bilhorod-Dnistrovsky, Ukrainian SSR, as the son of Vasyl Anatolyovich Lomachenko and Anatoly Lomachenko in Tetiana and Anatoly Lomachenko. His mother was a gymnastics coach, while his father was a boxing coach. Lomachenko himself was interested in becoming a professional ice hockey player, but his father persuaded him to pursue a boxing career instead. Before he could even get into the ring, Lomachenko’s father made sure his son took ballet and gymnastics classes so that he could learn footwork and balance.

Vasyl Lomachenko started his amateur career at the 2007 World Championships in Chicago, where he won silver after a fall against Albert Selimov. Lomachenko was able to avenge this defeat at the 2008 Olympic Games, where he won gold and was awarded the Val Barker trophy as the outstanding boxer of the tournament. He won gold again at the European Championships that year and at the World Championships in 2009.

He was again dominant in this new division when he won gold and became a world champion in the two-weight division. At the 2012 Olympics, Lomachenko won his second gold medal in a row, but this time in a different division, which made him the Olympic champion in the two-weight category. After this tournament, Wasyl Lomachenko, who had set an impressive amateur record, decided to become a professional.

Lomachenko started his professional career in the featherweight class by beating the Mexican fighter, José Ramirez. He controversially lost his second fight against Orlando Salido for the vacant WBO featherweight title but managed to win it in his next fight against Gary Russell Jr. because Salido lost it due to lack of weight. Lomachenko successfully defended his title on three occasions before moving up to the Super Featherweight/Junior Lightweight class, where he beat Román Martínez to win his WBO title in Super Featherweight.

Vasyl Lomachenko was able to beat four challengers, including the undefeated Jamaican boxer Nicholas Walters, to defend his title before deciding to move up to the weight classes again and compete against the WBA and The Ring Magazine lightweight world champion, Jorge Linares. Lomanchenko survived a knockdown to defeat Linares and secure the title in May 2018, which increased his record in professional boxing to 11-1.
