With nearly two decades of a career under his name as a professional basketball player, Zach Randolph is indeed a true NBA veteran. He was a first-round draft pick for the Portland Trail Blazers in 2001 and has played for at least four other NBA teams, including the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, and the Sacramento Kings, which he joined in 2017. The NBA veteran was born on July 16, 1981, in Marion, Indiana, as Zachary McKenley Randolph. He had his high school career at Marion High School and led the school’s basketball team, the Marion Giants, to two Indiana Class 4A championship titles in his second and final year. Randolph was the first runner-up in the 2000 Mr. Basketball election in Indiana, behind future New York Knicks teammate Jared Jeffries.

Randolph played a year of college basketball at Michigan State University. As a freshman, he averaged 10.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game on 33 outings for the Michigan State Spartans. At the end of the season, he signed up for the 2001 NBA draft.

Randolph was placed 19th overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the 2001 NBA Draft. After two rather uneventful seasons in which he served as a backup, the talented player finally had his breakthrough in the 2003/04 season when he earned a starting position in the Blazers’ lineup.

With one exception, he started in all but one of his 80 appearances and finished the season with a scoring average of 20.1 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. His impressive season record earned him the NBA “Most Improved Player” award. He was also offered a contract extension of 6 years at the end of the season.

Zach Randolph had his best performance with the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2006/07 season, which turned out to be his last season with the team. Before he was sent off the court in March 2007 due to a hand injury, he averaged 23.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game – a record in his career.

The NBA star was transferred to the New York Knicks in July 2007 as part of a multiplayer deal. He got a regular place in the Knicks line-up and showed a pretty decent performance during his time at the New York Knicks. During his more than a year at the Knicks, he averaged 18.0 points and 10.6 rebounds per game and after only 11 games he was transferred to the L.A. Clippers in November 2008 in the middle of his second season (2008/09). He finished the 2008-09 season with 20.9 points per game at the Clippers in 39 games.

In July 2009 it was time to switch to the Memphis Grizzlys as he was traded by the Clippers for Quentin Richardson. Randolph’s 8 years with the Grizzlies is the longest of his career to date and also the most successful. In his first season (2009-10) with the Grizzlies, he competed in all 81 events, scored an average of 20.8 points, and was nominated for the 2010 NBA All-Star Game, the first of his long career. The following year, after a successful 2010-2011 season, he was appointed to the third All-NBA team and was also nominated for his second All-Star Game in 2013. Randolph’s spell with the grizzlies ended after the 2016-17 season.

The NBA veteran joined the Sacramento Kings in July 2017 with a two-year contract. In his first season (2017-18), he received ample playing time, and the Kings finished with a point average of 14.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

Zach Randolph is currently married to Faune Randolph (née Drake). On August 10, 2014, the couple sealed the marriage in an elaborate ceremony in Indianapolis. Together they have three children; daughters named MacKenly and MaZiya and a son named Zachary Jr. The NBA star also has two other children, Zacharia and Zaqary, from previous relationships.

Apparently, Zach Randolph was raised mainly by his mother Mae Randolph, as his father is not mentioned in various accounts of his biography. He grew up with three siblings; his sisters Kelly and Tomika and a brother named Roger. Randolph lost his mother on November 24, 2016.

Sadly, the NBA veteran suffered another loss almost two years after his mother’s death. His brother Roger Randolph was fatally shot outside a bar in their hometown of Marion, Indiana, on June 16, 2018.
