After only five starts in his first season, he was named the best player on the team for his performance in his second year, scoring 10 or more points in each of the 21 games he played. He also helped the team advance to the last sixteen of the NCAA tournament, where they lost to eventual national champions Kentucky.

His burgeoning defensive and leadership skills helped the Hoosiers win the Big Ten Championship in his youth season.
