Lang was born on July 11, 1952, in New York City as the youngest of 3 children into a very wealthy family. His father, Eugene Lang, was an entrepreneur and philanthropist who founded the REFAC Technology Development Corporation. His mother, Theresa Volmer, is of German and Irish descent.

For his education, Lang, who would later be called the actor of the actor, received his primary school education in Jamaica Estates, Queens, before attending George Ryan Junior High School for his secondary education.
