Born as Rachel Alexander on October 18, 1973, in Phoenix, Arizona; Rachel was raised by her parents Ronald Jacobs and his wife Jane She has American citizenship and belongs to a white ethnic background. As Nichols grew up, he attended Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, Maryland. After completing her basic training, Rachel enrolled in the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, where she earned a degree in journalism in 1995.

After graduating, Rachel Nichols began her journalistic career with the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel in 1995. The Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel is the most important daily newspaper of Fort Lauderdale in the United States. She worked there as a reporter for one year; the following year she left the newspaper agency and moved to the Washington Post, where she worked as a reporter for the Washington-based news agency until 2004.

In search of a more challenging environment, Rachel Nichols joined ESPN in February 2004. She worked as a reporter in New York City, covering current news and major events in the city; she also did some investigative journalism and reports of human interest for the network. She also covered live coverage of the NFL and NBA games. During her time there, Nichols also worked as a sub reporter for Monday Night Football for E: 60 and as a contributor to The Sports Reporter.

In 2013, Nichols joined CNN as a sports presenter for the station. During her time there, she also worked as a Sub- reporter for Turner Sports.
