Prince Wiki, Sister

Prince was born in Minneapolis on June 7, 1958, the son of Mattie Della and John Lewis Nelson, who are of African-American descent. His family was one in which music had a celebrated place in their daily lives. His father was a songwriter who also played the piano, while his mother was no exception as a jazz singer. His father called him Prince because he wanted him to do everything he couldn’t do. He achieved more and must have done everything his father couldn’t do during his lifetime, maybe in music.

Prince has a younger sister named Tyka, who was born on May 18, 1960. Just like her brother, Tyka was interested in music because she enjoyed the support of her music-loving parents. This encouragement and playful support from his sister and his parents were perhaps the essential ingredients that propagated his first song when he was very young, playing on his father’s piano when he was 7 years old. The song was called Funk Machine.

He attended Minneapolis Bryant Junior High and then Central High School where, like all Americans, he was active in football, baseball, and, of course, basketball. He was good because he got steady playing time on the basketball team at Central’s junior university. As an adult, he continued to play the game in his free time.

The love between Mattie Della and John Lewis Nelson soon waned when they divorced. His mother remarried, and Prince eventually stayed with his stepfather Hayward Baker. Prince did not get along with him very well, however, as he often moved house with his mother (stepfather), his biological father, and his neighbors, the Anderson family, with whom he became friends with their son Andre.

Beginning of his Music Career

A relative of his, Pepe Willie, founded a band in 1975, which was named “94 East”. Prince played guitar in the band and wrote the song Just Another Sucker together with Pepe Willie. They recorded several songs, which later formed the album Minneapolis Genius – The Historic 1977 Recordings.

He signed his first management contract at the age of 17 with Owen Husney, a Minneapolis businessman who helped him create a demo at Sound 80 Studios in Minneapolis under the tutelage of producer/engineer David Z. This demo recording went public and led to several record companies, including Warner Bros. Records, A&M Records and Columbian Records showing interest in the young man.

With Husney’s help and approval, he signed for Warner Bros. Records, giving him creative control over 3 albums and ownership of the publishing rights. This was a good deal and the beginning of bigger things to come. His first album called For You was recorded at Record Plant Studios in Sausalito, California. He continued to make music with Warner Bros. continued to make music over the years, although he left at one time but returned in later years.
