Laura Elizabeth Dern was born on February 10, 1967, in Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California. Her mother, Diane Ladd, and her father, Bruce Dern, are both actors. Her parents’ marriage broke up when she was 2 years old, after which she was raised by her mother and grandmother.
Laura Dern received her college education at the University of California, Los Angeles, and then studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. She made her professional acting debut in the action movie White Lightning (1973), in which she played alongside her mother. She then appeared in several smaller roles and eventually received her first major role in the 1982 film Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains, and also played remarkable roles in films such as Mask (1985), Blue Velvet (1986), and Wild at Heart (1990).
Dern was the leading actor in the film Rambling Rose (1991), in which her mother Diane Ladd played a supporting role.
