Julie Chen is an American television personality, producer, and news anchor at CBS. She has known both as the host and hostess of CBS’ The Talk and as the host of the US version of the reality shows Big Brother since its premiere in 2000.

Chen was also the co-host of CBS News’ weekday morning show The Early Show. She also served as the show’s contributing anchor for nearly two years. She worked as a journalist and covered many news stories for the show, including the Iraq war and the conflict between Kuwait and Qatar.

She has also interviewed a handful of prominent politicians and celebrities around the world, including Jennifer Lopez, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Angelina Jolie, Tom Hanks, former Secretary of Defense William Cohen, Tom Cruise, Queen Rania of Jordan, Ben Affleck and Chris Rock.

In 2017, Chen won an Emmy for outstanding entertainment talk show host Daytime for the first time, alongside Sharon Osbourne, Sheryl Underwood, and Sara Gilbert.

Julie Chen is the daughter of Chinese immigrants (Wan Ling Chen and David Y Chen), who was born on January 6, 1970, in Queens, New York City. She has two older sisters, Gladys and Victoria.

Chen was well educated, she began her education at Whitestone Junior High School, Queens, before attending St. Francis Preparatory School, which she graduated from in 1987. She also graduated from the University of Southern California in 1991 with a B.A. in broadcast journalism and English.

Julie revealed in an interview that from the first moment she saw an Asian named Kaity Tong as a news anchor on ABC, she knew she would be a media personality. Back then, it was a big deal to see an Asian woman as a newscaster, and her mother pointed out to her that she could actually do that.

She put it this way: “It was as if she had planted that seed and I watered it myself. From then on, I just didn’t know any other way.”

Career

She started as an intern at CBS Morning News alongside Andy Cohen. As an intern at the station, she answered phones and copied faxes for distribution.

While still a student, Chen worked as a desk assistant at ABC’s NewsOne for a season. After doing a good job as a desk assistant, she was promoted to producer and stayed with ABC for the next three years.

In 1995 she moved to Dayton, Ohio, where she worked as a news anchor for WDTN-TV until 1997. During her stay in Dayton, Chen underwent blepharoplasty – a surgical procedure that made her eyes appear larger.

From 1999 to 2012 she hosted the CBS news programs Morning News, This Morning, and The Early Show alongside Maggie Rodriguez, Bryant Gumbel, Rene Syler, Harry Smith, Jane Clayson, Erica Hill, and Hannah Storm.

Prior to anchoring CBS News, Chen worked as a reporter and weekend host at WCBS-TV in New York City. In 2000, she became the host of the American version of Big Brother.

Julie also appeared as a guest on the NCIS: Los Angeles episode of In The Line of Duty, where she acts as their ambassador. She also appeared in the following movies: Madam Secretary, Jane the Virgin, The Comeback, The Fairly OddParents, The Millers, and Life in Pieces.

On December 23, 2004, Chen and Moonves tied the knots in a ceremony at a private home in Acapulco, Mexico, in the presence of a few friends and family. On September 24, 2009, the couple welcomed their first child, Charlie Moonves.
