Doug Marrone began as an offensive lineman but now serves as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, the NFL (National Football League). He was also Director of Football Operations at Georgia Tech and served as Offensive Coordinator with the New Orleans Saints between 2006 and 2008.
Moreso once served as head coach at Syracuse University from 2009 to 2012, making him the first “Syracuse graduate” to serve as head football coach at the university since Reaves H. Baysinger in 1948. Having coached the running back CJ Spiller in the Buffalo Bills and worked under Herm Edwards, Sean Payton, and Gus Bradley, it is no surprise that he is considered one of the best football coaches around.

Doug Marrone Bio, Age
Doug Marrone was born on July 25, 1964, as Douglas Charles Marrone. Not much is known about his childhood and his family, but the fact that he is of Italian descent is clear. Although he was born in the Bronx, he studied for three years at Syracuse University, where he played football as an offensive lineman from 1983-1985. He then left Syracuse to play for the Miami Dolphins in 1987 and later for the New Orleans Saints in 1989. He was also on the team of the London Monarchs in the World League. In 1991 he returned to the University of Syracuse and graduated.
NFL Coaching Career
He began his coaching career in Cortland State as a tight end coach and also worked as an offensive line coach for the Coast Guard in 1993. In 1994 he moved to Northeastern to fill the same position. Doug Marrone served at Georgia Tech from 1996 to 2000 as both a tight end coach and an offensive line coach. In 2001, he worked in Tennessee (Tennessee) as a Tight Ends Coach and Offensive Tackles Coach, then worked with the New York Jets as an Offensive Line Coach from 2002 to 2005, and returned to the New Orleans Saints in 2006 as Offensive Coordinator and remained there until 2008. On December 11, 2008, shortly after the 2008 season, Doug was named head football coach of Syracuse University.
During Doug’s first season with the Oranges, they finished with four wins, one more than the previous year. The following season, they doubled this achievement, making this year (2010) the year with the most wins since 2001. There were as many highlights this season as the win against Kansas State and the very first Pinstripe Bowl in New York City. This was the Oranges’ first bowl victory since 2001, and they began 2011 with a 5-2 win, including a victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers. However, they failed to win another game this season, resulting in a 5-7 record. In 2012, Doug coached the Oranges to an 8-5 record and also won a share of the Big East title by playing four. They then defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers again with a 38-14 win in the Pinstripe Bowl.
On January 6, 2013, he was selected to succeed the former head coach of the Buffalo Bills, Chan Gailey. Doug managed to set a total record of 15-17 during his stay as head coach. It was also a time when “Saint Doug” became his official nickname because he believed that one win in Buffalo and another in Syracuse were two miracles in his career. He compared this to his belief that two visible miracles had to happen to be canonized as saints. In 2014, the Bills ended up with a record 9-7 and also finished second in AFC East, two wins away from reaching the playoffs. This was also the Bills’ first winning streak in 10 years. At the end of the 2014 season, however, it turned out that Doug had a three-day off a clause in his contract in case of a change of ownership that he wanted to take advantage of, so he resigned on December 31, 2014, and still received his full salary for 2015.
The Jaguars hired Doug Marrone on January 20, 2015, as the team’s assistant head coach and offensive coach. Interestingly, Doug Marrone was later appointed interim head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars on December 19, 2016, following the dismissal of former head coach Gus Bradley. Subsequently, on January 9, 2017, the interim Jaguar shield was officially removed, making Doug Marrone the fifth head coach in the team’s history. On January 7, 2018, Doug led the Jaguars to their first playoff win, marking the first playoff win in ten years.

Doug met his wife Helen through Colleen O’Brien (the wife of his colleague Bill O’Brien). Colleen and Helen were already roommates at school. Helen is from Tennessee and was born Helen Mary Donnely on December 31, 1969, in Murfreesboro, the home of James “Boots” Donnely, a former soccer coach who trained at Middle Tennessee State University for many years. She is an attorney and is actively involved in many charitable activities. Doug and Helen together have three beautiful children, two daughters named Madeline Marrone and Annie Maronne, and a son named Mack Marrone.
