Career Beginnings And Breakthrough

Yara began her career when she was only six years old, appearing in many television and print commercials for various companies, including The Children’s Place, Ralph Lauren, Target, McDonald’s, Guess Kids, Gap Kids, and Disney. For most of her ads and print campaigns, she occasionally worked with her younger brother and mother.

Next, Yara did what many try to do and what few succeed in doing – and that is to turn a successful modeling career into an acting career. She found her acting entrance in Imagine that, a 2009 comedy starring Eddie Murphy. The film focused on the relationship between Eddie Murphy’s character and his daughter Olivia (played by Yara) as her imaginary world provides information her father needs to be successful. Although the film was a box office hit, her performance in the film was praised, which is why she received a nomination for the Young Artist Award for best performance in a feature film category.

She later starred in Entourage, The Finder, Salt, Alex Cross, Butter, and Unthinkable. In 2012 she was given the leading role of Chloe Johnson in the comedy series The First Family.

Shortly thereafter she was cast in the ABC comedy Black-ish as Zoey Johnson alongside Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson in the role of Zoey Johnson. The series had several breakout characters, but Yara Shahidi won the hearts and devotion of teenagers around the world, securing a large and loyal fan base. She won an NAACP image award for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for her role in the black and white version. Thanks to her success in the series, the station gave the green light for a spin-off series, “Grown-ish,” based around her character, which premiered on January 3, 2018.

She is also related to the American rapper Nas, who is her cousin.
