Van Susteren was born Greta Conway Van Susteren on 11 June 1954 in Appleton, Wisconsin, as the daughter of a father of Dutch descent and a mother of Irish descent. Her father Urban Van Susteren was a good friend of former US Senator Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy was Urban McCarthy’s best man during his wedding to Van Susteren’s mother. And Urban served as McCarthy’s campaign strategist before their paths diverged.

Their mother, Margery Conway, was a housewife. Van Susteren has two siblings – Lise and Dirk Van Susteren. Her sister Lise is a practicing forensic psychiatrist in Bethesda, Maryland, and she is also interested in politics. She ran for the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate in 2006.

Her brother was a journalist and longtime editor of the Vermont Sunday Magazine before it was discontinued in 2008.

Greta is a graduate of Xavier High School, Appleton, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She graduated from the former in 1972 and the latter in 1976 with a double degree in geography and economics.

In 1979, she received her J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center. Before embarking on a career in broadcasting, she worked as a faculty assistant in law at Georgetown University in addition to her full-time legal career. For her professionalism, Greta Van Susteren was awarded an honorary doctorate in law by Stetson Law School.

Actually, she began her television career by appearing as a legal analyst on CNN during the O.J. Simpson murder trials and soon began hosting Burden of Proof and The Point at the same station. In 1998, she made a special guest appearance on the adult parody talk show Space Ghost Coast to Coast on the Cartoon Network.

In 2002, she moved to Fox News where she began hosting the show On the Record with Greta Van Susteren on current network topics. In 2016, after fourteen years at Fox News, she resigned and was replaced on the show by Brit Hume.

Van Susteren justified her resignation by saying that Fox had not really felt at home to her for several years and that she was, therefore, taking advantage of the clause in her contract that gave her the right to resign immediately if she so wished.

The media commentator and legal analyst have been married to the millionaire lawyer and her former partner John P. Coale since 1988.

The couple, who are both members of the Church of Scientology, has no child(ren) together. Although Coale has been married before, there is no reliable information on whether he has children from his previous marriage.

What Happened To Greta Van Susteren?

After the media icon left Fox News in 2016, many people continued to wonder what happened to her and what she is up to now. After leaving Fox News, Van Susteren signed a contract with NBC News to host their 6 pm ET program on MSNBC, entitled For the Record with Greta.

The program, which began broadcasting on January 9, 2017, was the last broadcast on June 29, 2017, but according to Van Susteren, the program was stopped because it was not doing well in terms of ratings. In October 2017 she joined Voice of America, VOA, as a contributor.
