Warren Beatty is a very successful actor, producer, and director of American descent. He is one of only three people to have received an Oscar nomination for writing, producing, directing, and starring in the same film, a feat he accomplished twice with Heaven Can Wait (1978) and Reds (1981).

The Hollywood icon was born as Henry Warren Beaty on March 30, 1937, in Richmond, Virginia. His family moved several times before finally settling in Arlington County, Virginia. His mother Kathlyn Corinne (née MacLean) was a teacher, as was his father Ira Owens Beaty, but he also worked as a real estate agent. His older sister Shirley MacLaine (née Beaty) is also an actress, singer, dancer, and writer. He studied at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School and later moved to Washington-Lee High School, both in Arlington.

Warren Beatty was a star football player during his high school days but was also interested in movies through several visits to the theatre with his sister. Encouraged by his sister’s up-and-coming Hollywood career, Warren decided to follow his sister’s example. After graduating high school, he turned down several college soccer scholarships and decided to study liberal arts at Northwestern University. After only one year, he dropped out of college altogether and switched to acting studies at Stella Adler Studio of Acting. Beatty began his acting career on television with minor roles in series such as Kraft Television Theatre (1957), Studio One (1957), and a supporting role in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1959-60).

This was followed by roles in The Roman Spring by Mrs. Stone (1961), Lilith (1963), Mickey One (1965), and Kaleidoscope (1966). Warren Beatty made his debut as a producer in the highly praised biography Bonnie and Clyde (1967), in which he also appeared as a leading actor.

Bonnie and Clyde was a box office hit and also received numerous awards, including 10 Oscar nominations and 7 Golden Globe nominations. Beatty produced, co-wrote, and starred in the romantic comedy Shampoo (1975), which was also a huge success. With the fantasy comedy Heaven Can Wait (1978), in which he acted as director, producer, and leading actor, he was able to further expand his A-list status.

Similarly, Beatty served as producer, co-writer, and leading actor in the historical epic Reds (1981), which won him the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Director. Reds received a total of 12 Oscar nominations and 7 Golden Globe nominations. After a long break, Beatty returned to the winning ways when he produced, directed, and starred in the action-comedy Dick Tracy (1990). The film was both commercially and critically successful, receiving 7 Oscar nominations and 4 Golden Globe nominations. After the miserable performance of the romantic comedy Town & Country (2001), in which he played the leading role, Warren Beatty again took a long break from acting. He returned as an actor and director when he resumed his Dick Tracy role in a spin-off of Dick Tracy Special (2010). He also co-wrote, co-produced, directed, and starred in the romantic comedy-drama Rules Don’t Apply (2016). However, the film was a commercial flop.
