An actor’s ability to accurately bring the character he portrays to life is what sets the best in the business apart. There are usually numerous cases where an actor has been typecast based on his or her ability to bring a role to life. This happens with stereotyped roles in most cases, but there are also other cases where the actor gets just that particular role because he has performed it perfectly in the past. This is exactly the case with Fairuza Balk, who is considered by many film viewers to be a real-life witch because of her credible portrayal of dark and edgy roles over the years.
In addition to her perfect, dark, and edgy roles in films such as The Worst Witch and The Craft in the 80s and 90s, Fairuza Balk has also impressed many as a musician and narrator. Recently, however, not much has been heard of the actress, who comes from a family of freethinking artists.
Who is Fairuza Balk?
Fairuza Balk was born as Fairuza Alejandra Feldthouse on May 21, 1974, in Point Reyes, California. Her parents are her father Solomon Feldthouse, who is of Romani and Cherokee descent, and her mother Cathryn Falk, who is of Irish and French descent.
Since Balk’s father was a traveling folk musician, the young girl was raised only by her mother, who studied, performed, and taught traditional dance forms from different countries around the world. The duo lived in Cloverdale, California until Fairuza was about 2 years old and they moved to Vancouver, British Columbia.
In Canada, Fairuza Balk began her acting career as a child. The mother-daughter duo then visited various cities in Europe, first London, England, and then Paris, France, where Fairuza further refined her craft before returning to Vancouver later. Later in life, after completing her high school education in Vancouver, Balk moved back to her native California to fully pursue her acting career in Hollywood.
Highlights Of Her Career Achievements
As already mentioned, Fairuza Balk began her acting career as a child. She made her acting debut in 1983 at the age of nine, when she starred in the TV movie “The Best Christmas Play of All Times”. Her most notable achievement as a child actress was in 1985 when she was cast by Walt Disney Productions to appear in Return to Oz as Dorothy Gale. Her outstanding performance in this role earned her a nomination for the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Young Actor.
Fairuza’s role as Dorothy Gale heralded her career as an actress as she was cast in several major and minor roles. In 1986 she played in The Worst Witch before she appeared in the French-American drama Valmont in 1989. Other notable films and television series in which she appeared as a teenager are Deadly Intentions… Again? (1991) and Gas Food Lodging (1992), where her performance earned her an Independent Spirit Award for a best female lead.
After moving to Hollywood in the mid-1990s, Fairuza Balk played the lead role of Nancy Downs in The Craft (1996). She received an MTV Movie Award for Best Fight alongside Robin Tunney and was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. After the portrayal of the witch Nancy Downs, Fairuza began to play in mostly dark roles. At some point, she was even accused of being a real witch, as she had extensive knowledge of witchcraft. The actress took all accusations on her chin for about two decades before she made a statement to address them, which shows that she did a lot of research to find out about the roles.
Over the years, Fairuza Balk has worked as a dubbing artist and has lent her voice to several animated films and video games. She has also followed in her father’s footsteps and has sung and written several songs. She spent some time as a member of the band G-13 before she released her own songs from her musical environment, Armed Love Militia, in the 2010s. Balk has worked with several artists including Mel Sanson, Camille Rose Garcia, and Jessicka Addams to name a few.
Why Her Time On-Screen Has Reduced In Recent Years
According to Fairuza Balk, one of the biggest challenges she has faced in her career is casting the stereotypical dark or edgy roles. As much as she loved portraying these characters, she admits that this is not necessarily all she wants to do. She also admits that she struggled with too much pressure in her 20s when she was repeatedly told to make more movies to remain relevant in Hollywood.
It is obvious that Fairuza has decided to slow down a bit on the acting front, as she only takes on roles that interest her and that are different from what she is known for. One of her more recent roles, which is quite different, is her recurring role as Ginger in Ray Donovan.
Outside of acting, you can see Fairuza trying to advance her music career. She has released a number of EPs over the years and has spoken openly about her music career.
The entertainer has also admitted that she likes the secret of her many talents as fans continue to guess and speculate about what she will do next. However, she has promised not to let up and to continue her career in acting and music.
