Terry described Todd as an authoritarian and perfectionist who was a thorn in his side during their turbulent marriage. Teresa said that at one point she was tired of their fight and her ex-husband’s constant corrections which led her to decide to end their marriage in 1994.

Teresa Terry later filed a domestic violence complaint against her husband. She finally left home taking Kyle who was three years old at the time with her. She tried to take Lindsie five years old but her husband stopped her.
In order to obtain custody of her daughter Terry filed a complaint about “illegal abduction” against her husband. She subsequently dropped the domestic violence complaint after their divorce was finalized in 1996. The couple then obtained joint physical and legal custody of Kyle and Lindsie. Teresa then moved to South Carolina to spend time with her children.
Shortly thereafter in 2000 Todd moved to Atlanta and filed a custody complaint seeking sole custody of their children. The battle lasted until 2002 when the couple was awarded joint custody of their children but under certain conditions.
The judge read that their children resided in Atlanta went to school in the city, and would make their father’s house in Atlanta their primary residence. However, they were allowed to visit their mother for three weekends even year, including holidays and vacation periods.

Teresa Terry and Todd Chrisley first crossed paths when she was seventeen years old and he was nineteen.
At the time of their initial meeting, Teresa was a senior in a public high school located in Westminster South Carolina. Not long after they met Teresa and her partner began dating. Reflecting on this period of their relationship Teresa recalled:
“It was all very southern very laid back eating meals with the family that sort of thing. Todd and I would go to the movies and hang out. He was never one for big crowds. He always belonged somewhere else.”
Teresa and Todd spent a considerable amount of time with his family making it the go-to place for them and their friends after school or on weekends. The family always made them feel welcome with Faye – Todd’s mother – even going so far as to prepare meals for the couple.

At 19 years old Teresa was faced with an unexpected and difficult reality when she became pregnant with her first child by her then-boyfriend Todd Chrisley. Life threw a curveball at the young woman forcing her to confront the challenge of a premature pregnancy.

“There were times when Todd would scream uncontrollably at me for no apparent reason – only to change the tact and give me the silent treatment for days and days.”

She said “I like to put on a ball cap put my hair in a ponytail and go out. But with him, your hair always had to be fixed and you had to be dressed to the tens. I grew tired of being constantly corrected and I would run my mouth.”
She also added:
“Sometimes I think he doesn’t realize the way he is. He’s so used to being controlling and vindictive that he doesn’t even see it anymore.”
