Professional basketball player Stanley Johnson joined the Detroit Pistons after the NBA Draft 2015. Johnson, who was selected in the first round of the draft, had a very successful amateur career in both high school and college before turning pro in 2015. Stanley Herbert Johnson Jr. was born on May 29, 1996, in Anaheim, California. He was an outstanding player during his time at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California, and among many other highlights, he won four consecutive CIF State Championship titles with the school.

Johnson was honored in both his first and second year on the first team of the CIF All-State Football Team and was named to the first team of the CIF All-League and the first team of the All-California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division I in his second season. His junior season was rather uneventful, but he ended his high school career with an impressive run during his senior season.

He was named first-team HS All-American by USA Today and was named High School National Player of the Year by MaxPreps.com. He won California’s Mr. Basketball Prize 2014 and has also been a featured player at the McDonald’s All-American, Jordan Brand Classic, and Nike Hoop Summit.

As a 5-star recruit, Stanley Johnson was among the highest-rated players in the 2014 high school class and chose the University of Arizona from several offers for his college career. Though short-lived, Johnson’s one-year tenure with the Arizona Wildcats could be described as explosive. The talented youngster competed in all 38 events, with the team averaging 28.4 minutes, 13.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.5 steals per game as a rookie.

For his outstanding performance, he was honored in the All-Pac-12 Freshman Team and in the first team of the All-Pac-12 Tournament and was also accepted into the All-Tournament Team of the Pac-12 Tournament. He won the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year award and was named to the All-District IX All-District Team and the All-Freshman All-American Team by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). He also received the inaugural Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year award for the 2014-15 NCAA Division I season.

In April 2015, Stanley Johnson announced his decision to enter the 2015 NBA Draft by waiving his remaining 3 years of college eligibility. He was eventually placed 8th in the first round by the Detroit Pistons.

Johnson started his career with the Pistons on a high note after an impressive performance with the team during the 2015 season break. In a total of 5 appearances in the 2015 Summer League he scored 16.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.8 steals, and 1.0 blocks. As a newcomer, he started most of the 2015-16 season from the substitutes’ bench and finished the season with a point average of 8.1 points and a career highlight of 4.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

After 21 appearances in the 2016-17 NBA season, Johnson was appointed to the Detriot Pistons’ NBA Development League (D-League), Grand Rapids Drive, on December 10, 2016. He was recalled the following day, although he was not given any more playing time for the rest of the season. His scoring average dropped to 4.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game for the entire season.

The NBA star earned regular playing time in the 2017-18 season, during which he played 50 games in a total of 69 appearances. His productivity also improved as his death average rose to 8.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.

Family Life

Stanley Johnson is the only child of his parents – Karen Taylor and Stanley Johnson Sr. His parents’ marriage ended in divorce, after which he was raised by his mother in Fullerton, California.

Apparently, the NBA star is not the only member of the family with amazing athletic talents, as his mother Karen was also a basketball star in her prime at 5’8″. She played college basketball at Jackson State University, after which she played professionally in Europe. It is credited to her that she taught the NBA star the basics of the game in brown leather from an early age. Johnson’s mother was inducted into the Jackson University Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. However, she passed away in the summer of 2015, just before her son’s NBA career began.
